Report: Master Page Usage

MasterPageUsage.fsi

Problem description

In FrameMaker, master pages can be applied automatically based on certain paragraph formats on a page. If this is not possible for a variety of reasons, an overview of the master pages that are used is desirable.

Such an overview is also helpful for the analysis of documents, changes of pages and quality assurance.

FrameMaker does not offer an option to display the master pages that are used (except for individual pages through ‘Format > Page Layout > Master Page Usage’).

Function description

The script creates a report for the master pages that are used.

Either an index or a list can thereby be generated.

An index of the master pages is helpful in order to recognize how often a specific master page is used.

Note: The page numbers in the report contain hyperlinks to the corresponding body pages.

A list of master pages is used to check the correct assignment of document and position-dependent master pages.

The example below shows that the master page ‘BlankPageRight’ on page 22 was incorrectly applied (22 is a left page) and the master page ‘BlankPageLeft’ on page 32 is used in the middle of the document (instead of on the last page).

Requirements

  • FrameMaker 6.0 or higher
  • FrameScript/ElmScript 4.1 or higher

Notes

The script works with structured and unstructured documents.

The hyperlinks do not always work when there is no text frame on the target page and the insertion point is positioned on a different page in the document.

The report is saved in the book folder (‘_[i]_MasterPageIndex.fm’ or ‘_[i]_MasterPageList.fm’).
