Rename Book Components

Problem description

Although for process reasons it is not recommended to include the language of a document in the file name, documents with such names are still relatively common.

If the files are renamed on the file system level, document spanning references will thereby become invalid (hypertext links, cross-references and text insets).

The files of a book may be renamed in all languages with FrameMaker but only individually for each document (‘Edit > Rename File’). FrameMaker will adjust the references of all book components to this one document.

FrameMaker does not provide the option for a global renaming of all book components (and simultaneous adjustment of references).

Function description

The script permits renaming of all book components based on a unique identifiable string.

This string may be placed at the beginning, end or even in the middle of a file name (‘Prefix Only’ and ‘Suffix Only’ options).
The file extension (‘.fm’) is not taken into consideration here.

Optionally, upper case and lower case spelling of the string may be taken into account (‘Consider Case’ option).

If necessary, create a temporary book that contains all documents and referenced text insets. You can use the Create Book of Text Insets script to do this.

If the documents were not yet open at the time the script was started, the errors that occurred while opening the documents will be displayed.

The renaming of the book components may be aborted at this point.

After the book components have been renamed, the number of adjusted objects will be displayed.

To top

  • FrameMaker 6.0 or higher
  • FrameScript/ElmScript 4.1 or higher

The script works with structured and unstructured documents.

However, the script will not adjust the element attributes of structured documents.
